Flight 93 News:

Campaign Phases

40 Memorial GrovesSeptember 11, 2011. This date will mark ten years since the events of 9/11 tragically culminated in the crash of Flight 93. To ensure the timeliness of this occasion and prepare for future expansion, plans for building the Flight 93 National Memorial will follow a sequence of construction cycles or “phases.”

The first phase, Remembering the Heroes, focuses on the central message of recognizing and honoring the 40 passengers and crewmembers whose selfless and heroic actions aboard Flight 93 saved countless lives by preventing the hijacked plane from reaching the nation’s capital.  By preserving the crash site and creating a plaza from which to view this sacred ground, as well as creating an open field of honor overlooking the site, the first steps of creating a place of understanding and healing will have been made.

In addition to the bricks and mortar of the memorial, the landscape will be transformed by planting wildflowers and native grasses and creating pond habitats. Infrastructure including an on-site volunteer docent facility, lighting and road work will be accomplished during this first phase.

Two successive campaigns phases, History in the Making and Speak with One Voice, will add a visitor center, memorial groves, and a dramatic entry experience to the previously completed portion of the memorial’s design.

Within each phase are opportunities for sponsorship and recognition of donors who generously step forward in support of the Campaign and the goals for the Flight 93 National Memorial.
